FEMINISM
I recently came across an organization (and book) called Women Writing for (a) Change: A Guide for Creative Transformation. And within, this amazing poem:
WOMEN WRITING
Yesterday I read
how hummingbirds
sometimes die
in their sleep.
How at night
hummingbirds can sink
into a zombie-like state
in which their breathing is shallow
and their large, wild hearts slow
to 36 beats per minute.
I began to wonder
if this might not happen
with many women
who don’t have opportunities
like this women-writing-for-a-change class.
Does their breath slow
and do their hearts wind down
to a non-creative stupor . . .
and they don’t even know it?
The article goes on to say
that in the daytime,
that is with the light,
the hummingbird’s heart
beats 500 times per minute
soaring to 1200 beats
as they feast and fly
court and play.
I have had a similar experience
when I listen
to the outpourings of the soul
of the women in our writing class -
these women have huge hearts
to fuel their flights
to places unknown
and sometimes unexplored.
Women writing for a change are
like the flock of awakened hummingbirds
coming to life
gathering, sharing,
blessing the nectar of experience.

Beautiful, isn’t it? The poem – and the potential for change…through writing. Thanks, Josie.
I don’t know why, but this made me cry! I think maybe because this was me, in the darkness…now there is light and my heart beats so fast!

Shawna, Julie, and Alisha: SO glad you enjoyed the poem. I’ve read it multiple times now and feel my heart both speed up and slow down simultaneously within its lines. Perfect. Timely. Rich. Beautiful. Woman!!!
What a beautiful poem with such an important message. We women have so much to offer to the world, and it is only just beginning to make itself known…this offering that is Woman.

Amazingly beautiful.

That’s incredibly moving, both for what we women do to ourselves and allow to have done to us, and at the thought of a hummingbird dying in it’s sleep. Perhaps both women and hummingbirds should die in one last flash of iridescent colour as we fly towards the sun.

So beautiful, Tess. Thank you.
