I literally stumbled across this amazing thing today: a quickly-growing, Twitter-generated, blog-developed, awesome- buttons-created challenge for those who love books and love women! It’s a reading challenge that runs for one year – November 1, 2009 – November 30, 2010. I’m TOTALLY in!
Participants are encouraged to read nonfiction and fiction books related to the rather broad idea of ‘women’s studies.’ The definition according to Merriam-Webster: …the multidisciplinary study of the social status and societal contributions of women and the relationship between power and gender. Whew! Intrigued? Enticed? Provoked? If you want to join me (and many others) click here for more information, how to get thick in the mix, how to post your list, or to look at the lists of others for ideas and even more intrigue, enticement, and provocation!
There are three levels of involvement:
Philogynist: read at least two books, including at least one nonfiction one.
Bluestocking; read at least five books, including at least two nonfiction ones.
Suffragette: read at least eight books, including at least three nonfiction ones.
I’m going with the latter (fingers-crossed considering my long-standing book group of 12 years and the many other tomes I have sitting around my house not to mention so many others yet awaiting purchase)! Here’s my list (which, by the way, you can order through My Amazon Store – the link’s to your right!!!):
NONFICTION:
- The World Split Open, Ruth Rosen
- The Maternal is Political, Shari MacDonald Strong
- Hagar, Sarah, and Their Children, Phyllis Trible and Letty M. Russell
- Women’s Ways of Knowing, Belenky, McVicker Clinchy, Goldberger, & Tarule
- Reading Lolita in Tehran, Azar Nafizi
FICTION:
- The Red Tent, Anita Diamant
- A Monstrous Regiment of Women, Laurie King
- Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bronte
Join me!!! We’ll get to talk about the books, right reviews, have all kind of great conversations on Twitter (#unbound), and just be more informed, and even more brilliant “knowers” of women. What could be better?

Jane Eyre, huh? Sure, why not. This is one book I *think* I read in HS but wonder if I should reread to make sure. The Red Tent is a good one and so is Reading Lolita in Tehran. I look forward to your reviews! Thank you.
Sadly, I have never read Jane Eyre. One of my most favorite feminist-friends reads it yearly so I’m quite certain it “qualifies.” And…it will force/invite me to finally enter its charm! The Red Tent I’ve read before, but many years ago, and want to re-think some of what Diamant is trying to convey. And yes, Lolita in Tehran. Books. Women. A great combination! Thanks for commenting. This should be a great year of connections, shared thought, and challenge.
Ronna -
It is wonderful to see someone like youself join this challenge.
There seems to be quite a few women who are adverse to the feminist label. I am not.
Looking forward to your thoughts about your reading – and other conversations.
