Truly Radical

by Ronna Detrick on August 18, 2009

I was standing at the counter in a coffee shop this morning, trying to get two extremely hot Americano’s into the cup holder. As I worked to wrangle them into place without scalding my fingers, I looked down and saw this quote taped to the counter.

To be truly radical is to make hope possible rather than despair convincing.
Raymond Williams

I couldn’t have imagined how relevant this quote would be for me in the hours that followed. Graciously, gratefully, sleep will come soon and a night of sleep will lead to a new day, new opportunity, new stories to hear and tell.

Who can doubt hope’s presence and power when words like these show up on today or all days? I’m quite certain they were “out there” just for me. I hope so. I hope. That coffee-stained s sentiment enabled me to be truly radical today…holding on to hope despite despair’s ever-present knocking.

I’m grateful. I’m hopeful. And it’s tiring being a radical. To bed.
