As I was driving to work this morning at 5:30, navigating through the traffic, I worked to find the lane that would give me the clearest advantage and fastest route up the freeway for the 50+ miles to work. It was still dark so I could easily see the distance between me and other drivers for their headlights. I noticed that the city bus beside me wanted to change lanes and that there was plenty of space behind me for that to happen. Then I thought, “Why don’t I just let the bus in?” So, I slowed down and the bus easily merged in front of me. As soon as it was in my lane, the driver tapped on the brakes in two even beats: Blink. Blink. “Thank you.” I smiled.
And I wondered. Such a small thing, but what a difference might it make? Could the world not be filled with opportunity for such moments? Would we not discover and experience God far more actively and often if we pursued, offered, and welcomed such grace?
My day was made better by the driver’s “Thank you.” I hope the driver’s day was made better by the same and that those who then got on that bus were welcomed with a smile, which led to their kindness to others and so on. And I believe that the “Thank you” for me merited a deeper sense of gratitude for my connectivity to all of life (and all the lives) around me and the God who creates, cares, and enlivens all – past, present, and future.
Blink. Blink. “Thank you.” Maybe we could start a movement!
