More than one "right"

I have lived much of my life believing that there was a right way and a wrong way to do things, to feel, to act. It makes things simpler, really. We can make the right choice and then feel good about ourselves (or others) or make the wrong choice and beat ourselves up (or others). The decision is pretty clear – as are the consequences. But what if there was more than one right choice? What if things weren’t nearly as black and white as we think (or wish) they were? What if we are offered multiple ways in which to do things, feel, and act…that aren’t bad or good, right or wrong, but just options, possibilities, choices?

I can feel the pull in me toward those simpler categories, but even more, I feel the pull to new categories, new constructs, new paradigms, new thoughts, new feelings…even new choices. And I want that for those I care about, as well.

So, today I am choosing to live in gray; to let multiple realities, choices, and consequences all exist in a sort-of soup. I like soup (just had Cream of Mushroom for lunch today), but I’m not a big fan of gray – as a color. My daughters tell me, however, that I wear way too much black. So maybe this is a good step in a good direction: eating more soup, wearing something other than black, allowing (myself and others) to make choices that are less about black and white and more about what is “right” – even if that’s confusing, un-planned, un-predictable, and messy.

I don’t know…just something I’m thinking about – and trying to not figure out the “right” answer, at least right now.
