Learning

by Ronna Detrick on February 20, 2008

“The process of learning requires not only hearing and applying but also forgetting and then remembering again.” John Gray

I was in a meeting today where different emphases, perspectives, and agendas surfaced. This quote makes me wonder about some of those dynamics anew.

  • We listen, but we don’t always hear.
  • We may hear, but applying requires a different kind of hard work.
  • It often feels like we work hard, at times, to forget.
  • It’s often painful to remember.

I wonder what would happen if we would hear? If we would apply? If we would forget? If we would remember? And all of this together.

I also wonder what it would look like for us as Christians. As the church. As participants in U.S. and even global contexts. What if we were willing to hear the voices and perspectives of others? What if we were willing to apply what we heard? What if we were willing to forget – where we’ve been hurt, disappointed, harmed, misunderstood? What if we were willing to remember – what brings us together, what we share, what we love, what has been sacrificed on our behalf, that we’re not God…

I’ve got a lot to learn. I’m thinking we all do. Wouldn’t it be great if we could do it together?
