Heretics and Renegades

In a concerted effort to get myself to actually create, build, do and be what I keep talking about, dreaming about, procrastinating about, I’m reading a lot and then taking deliberate forward-moving action steps. Today I started and have almost completed Tribes by Seth Godin. My friend Sally has been talking to me about this book for the past four or five months and I even bought it that long ago; but something in me has been reluctant to read it. Maybe more truthful: something in me has been reluctant to put into practice the very things he has to say.

Here’s what I quickly and vigorously highlighted today (among many other things):

Heretics are engaged, passionate, and more powerful and happier than everyone else…Challenging the status quo requires a commitment, both public and private. It involves reaching out to others and putting your ideas on the line. (Or pinning your Ninety-five Theses to the church door). Heretics must believe. More than anyone else in an organization, it’s the person who’s challenging the status quo, the one who is daring to be great, who is truly present and not just punching a clock who must have confidence in her beliefs (p49).

I love this! And I love thinking about myself as a heretic, a renegade. So…that said (and in line with my desire to break free of my old and tiresome reluctance) watch for more in the days ahead on this very thing: being a renegade. I am one. And I want many more of you to join me! You, too can be engaged and passionate. You too can challenge the status quo. You, too must believe.

Be a renegade with me. Join the conversation.
