…fierce with reality

I spent the weekend with four incredible women: Sally Morgenthaler, Kimberly George, Hillary Augustine Vandenbos, and Susan Hall. If you know any/all of them you are better for it. If you do not, I would wish for you the gift and opportunity. You will be better for it. I know that I am.

We gathered in my home – as friends, as feminists, as wanderers together through the landscapes of arid deserts and lush pools. We laughed. We cried. We ate. We drank red wine, lemon drops, and mimosas. We had heady and heart-filled conversations. It was rich, beautiful, profound. It was a healing balm to my mind, body, and soul. It was an invitation into being even more of myself – through their eyes, words, and actions.

I will undoubtedly muse about our time together for many days to come, but for now, a quote (my new favorite) that captures so much for each of us and our weekend:

You need only claim the events of your life to make yourself yours. When you truly possess all you have been and done, which takes some time, you are fierce with reality. (Florida Scott-Maxwell)

We are women who have claimed the events of our lives – the beautiful and the dark. We have made ourselves our own – alone and in community. We continue to possess, embrace, and inculcate all we have been and done – and invite each other to even more. We are, indeed, fierce with reality.

To each of you: thank you. I am, today, even more me; even more fierce with reality. It’s a good and powerful place to be. I am, as well: good and powerful.
