Conversation Matters

by Ronna Detrick on November 6, 2009

A friend sent me these words yesterday knowing I’d resonate with them. She was right.

Your life is created one conversation at a time, through the language you use.

I don’t know who coined them, but I’ll give attribution to the same person she did and then say “thank you!”  It’s a great statement!

Conversation matters. It’s the stuff of life, really. It’s where stories are shared, plans are made, dreams are imagined, hearts are heard – and healed (and sometimes broken), love is expressed, lives are changed. And it is probably one of my most favorite activities in each and every day. I nearly always step out of good conversation sated, full, satisfied – like I’ve just consumed a fabulous meal with perfect preparation, great wine, great service and cannot imagine any more perfect feeling.

Language matters. Listen to Confucius:

If language is not correct, then what is said is not what is meant; if what is said is not what is meant, then what must be done remains undone; if this remains undone, morals and art will deteriorate; if justice goes astray, the people will stand about in helpless confusion. Hence there must be no arbitrariness in what is said. This matters above everything.

There’s no doubt about it: I’m drawn to, enticed by, seduced by good and amazing conversation. Further, I love language. I love the interplay of words, the choice of words, the impact of words. Frankly, I can’t get enough of either. Lucky for me, I’m surrounded by amazing people who enjoy the same!

My life is being created one conversation at a time by the language I use.

I’m grateful. ‘Off to find and participate in more great conversation! There’s ALWAYS more to be had!!!
