No risk of that, Clare. I've declawed my cat, but that's as far as it will go in this household! Thanks!

Oh, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!
Claws in, claws out. There is a time and a place for both.
Just don't ever let them de-claw you.

Thanks, Kristen. The verbal violence is real and...as a mother of two daughters...I see it play itself out between them, among their friends, everywhere/all the time. 'Makes me even more sad. I don't know the "answer" to the source AND I'm relatively certain it's not simple; rather a complex combination of a million factors - some which go back as far as Rachel/Leah and even before. I do know that naming these realities - past, present, and future - makes a difference. Naming such for my daughters (though complete with their eye-rolling) feels important And even naming those tendencies within myself...Hard, good work that matters.

Ronna, I think about this story all the time (we have family friends with two daughters named Rachel and Leah - an intriguing choice, I think, by parents who certainly know their Hebrew Bible). And lately I've been thinking more and more about female-on-female verbal violence. And about the ways in which strong women are told, like you were, to stay calm, to retract their claws.

Is female cattiness a myth? A self-fulfilling prophecy? A combination?

I'm still thinking, but am grateful, as always, for your words to help fuel my mental fire.
