About People

Yesterday I was involved in a day of training for Mars Hill Graduate School students who will be part of the observer/facilitator team for the upcoming conference: The Leadership Crucible. www.leadershipcrucible.com As we were talking about this event and its significance, I was struck anew by how important relationships are in the context of leading; far more so than the crises, challenges, and context in which one leads. It is the people themselves who determine how each crisis or challenge is met. The crisis and challenge cannot determine such. The way we spend our time, however, would fool us into believing otherwise. We spend the bulk of our time putting out one fire after another – with little time spent nurturing, valuing, and enjoying the relationships around us. What if we changed our priorities and our time-management? What if we focused far more on those with whom we spend the bulk of our days – who they are, how they are, what they are capable of, what they struggle with…

It’s hard to do, I know. There is so much that demands our time and energy. But what if? It seems worth considering – and pursuing.

It’s what we’ll consider and pursue at The Leadership Crucible this upcoming March. I hope I can allow it to seep into far more than those three days, however. I really want to be about people.
