I was in a bookstore Friday: a SUPER dangerous place for me to be. I must say though, that I’m rather proud of myself. I only purchased one book, and used at that! Not that I wasn’t profoundly tempted to fill my trunk with the multitude of treasures I spotted, but I resisted as I’m convinced that the stacks and shelves of yet-unread books at home haunt me!
I avoided my conscience long enough to add this one to my library: Fearless Girls, Wise Women & Beloved Sisters: Heroines in Folktales from Around the World by Kathleen Ragan.
The title alone makes me happy. The cover image is beautiful, isn’t it? And the inside: full of hope.
Here are words from the flyleaf:
Dismayed by the predominance of male protagonists and heroes in her daughters’ books, Kathleen Ragan set out to collect the stories of our forgotten heroines: courageous mothers, clever young girls, and warrior women who save villages from monsters, rule wisely over kingdoms, outwit judges, kings, and tigers…Fearless Girls, Wise Women, and Beloved Sisters is for all women who are searching to define who they are, to redefine the world, and to shape their collective sensibility. It is for men who want to know more about what it means to be a woman. It is for our daughters and our sons, so they can learn to value all kinds of courage, courage in battle, and the courage of love. It is for all of us to help build a more just vision of women.
How could I not buy it?
And how can I keep writing? For now, I’m off to read…full of hope.
Just in case you wondered: no kickback for me on this hearty endorsement (unless you click on the link above and buy it through my Amazon Store). But as I mentioned yesterday, there is another book you can buy (by clicking here or on the image in the sidebar to the right) that does make me money. And I’m not too proud to take it! What’s more, it has my even-more-hearty endorsement: Danielle LaPorte’s The Firestarter Sessions. Buy it! Use it! And enflame your entrepreneurial world! No bookstore needed, one solitary purchase, and loads of hope.

You know? One day, I was talking about the dangers of me being in a bookstore. (Can anyone say ‘addiction’? Yeah.) A friend made a suggestion/comment about something I literally hadn’t thought about in years — the library! Woo hoo! Now I indulge my addiction with none of the guilt! haha
Glad you found a book today that made you happy. Those moments are treasures.
Love!

I’m with you. It’s never too late for amazing fairy tales…especially when they’re about amazingly-strong women! Thanks, Deb.
Beautiful imagery, powerful concept. Bet it will make for some great blogging material. I am eager to see what juicy tidbits it triggers for you (and us).
Me too, Angie! Thanks.
